John Black, Director:

John Black serves as Director of Music at Greenwood Church, the largest Presbyterian church in Rhode Island, and is conductor of the fifty voice Greenwood Concert Choir. He oversees an active, dynamic ministry of music, including frequent collaborations with professional orchestra, a thriving community concert series, and a strong tradition of excellence in liturgical music. An active performer, John’s most recent engagements include an invitation to perform in the 2019 Newport Music Festival, where he was awarded a full scholarship to participate in the inaugural season of the festival’s Young Professional Artist Program, performing as solo pianist and in chamber ensembles at prestigious venues including Ochre Court, The Breakers, Aldrich Mansion and the Newport Art Museum. A current candidate for the Master of Arts degree in teaching music at Rhode Island College, John holds a B.A. in music with studies in piano, voice, and advanced conducting, and maintains a private studio of piano students. He also serves as principal pianist and organist for the Providence Singers and Rhode Island Children’s Chorus, with which he has performed at venues including the Rhode Island Convention Center and the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul in Providence, and for a commercial recording on the mighty pipe organ at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. Enjoying over ten years of service in liturgical music, John previously served as Director of Music at Barrington Presbyterian Church and as Organist at the historic Holy Ghost Church on Federal Hill, and still retains the position of Organist at Saint Mark’s Church in Jamestown. For the past ten consecutive seasons, John has served as resident pianist at the Newport Mansions during the Christmas season, performing as solo pianist and conducting choral performances at The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House. Besides performing as pianist, organist and choral conductor, John is an arranger of sacred choral and instrumental music, frequently creating and performing his own arrangements for the ensembles he serves.

Rehearsals and concerts are held at Greenwood Community Church, Presbyterian (805 Main Avenue in Warwick, minutes off I-95 near T.F. Green Airport).
